Carkade
Overview

Carkade crumbled as a civilisation so long ago (6,000 years ago) even the elves remember them only as a name and from their ruins, scattered across the world. The Carkade were a continents spanning empire whose exact homelands remain unknown to the modern world. How the Carkade expanded, the civilizations they conquered and came in contact with and their history are also unknown.

The Carkade Empire forced pacts onto other races, such as the Stone Giants and dragons which to the modern day forbid members of those races from entering protected parts of the world. Cruel subjugation, enslavement and mass sacrifice were the fate of most Carkade foes.

The Alin
Overview

The Alin were a powerful elderday race that dwelt on distant worlds. Some were so powerful they ascended into the cosmic order and became patrons to some of the Carkade elite. These ascended allowed a chosen few into their ancient mysteries and by extension thrall. The Alin were said to be to shuffle reality like a deck of cards (transformation and summoning) while the Carkade were unsurpassed in necromantic power.

The Alin were fractious and in constant conflict with others of their kind and other races. Under the influence of malevolent powers (e.g. the Horned God) over time most of the rulers and many commoners drifted into a lust for blood and destruction. This accelerated rapidly and the brutal death throes of the far flung Alin empire lead to the annihilation of many lands, worlds and deaths of untold millions of individuals.

The present day state of Alin is unknown

Sarpadian Empire
Overview

The Sarpadian Empire was a military power that conquered and ruled a large region of the northern part of the western continent. Initially a small kingdom, the militaristic Sarpadians expanded over centuries bringing to heel neighbouring duchies, principalities, tribes and kingdoms underneath the banner of one unifying empire. Their expansion commenced some 1,200 years ago, reached a zenith some 900 years ago before the utter collapse of the Empire some 500 years ago. The empire collapsed after a centuries long struggle against a deadly foe which destroyed them both.

Kingdom of Argos
A mercantile kingdom that started in the southern Focian plains, the Kingdom of Argos was contemporaneous with the Sarpadian Empire. The Kingdom of Argos existed for 500 years sending out colonies far and wide before succumbing to the same terror that saw the end of the Sarpadians.

There was a very active cult called the Cult of Bhaal within the Argos Irregulars - shock troops wielding murderous killing magic with close ties to the secret police of the kingdom.

Caridern
Overview

The Caridern are an extinct elder race of smoky blue skinned elves whose final cause of extinction is unknown to modern races. They were connected to the worlds of Eo and Cah-Galel, not to Faerun and were a society of skilled relentless warriors ruled by an elite caste of arch-mages. They sent expiditionary forces to other worlds via the Feywild before the recent minor discontinuance event started. They constructed outposts in the Feywild near places where access to the prime plane was relatively easy. The Caridern expanded outward more than 100,000 years ago, when there were fewer fissures and the Feywild linked 1,000s of worlds.

Their home was made uninhabitable in war with the Alin, and they were the builders of the "Feywild Fortress" accessed from Skaedguard.

The Caridern encountered Yurlunggur.

In Game

* SRG Party visited what was purported to be the Caridern homeworld via the Feywild Fortress
** bleak, dusty & windblown with minimal breathable atmosphere
** a desiccated Caridern corpse was found half buried in the sand of a broken surrounded by 3 dead Moranth
** Broken mountain sized metal discs on the horizon, jutting out from the ground at steep angles
* Archaeological evidence connected them to the worlds of Eo and Cah-Galel, not to Faerun
Keshin Sea and Chalk Tablelands
Overview

The Keshin Sea is a gigantic freshwater inland sea that is over 500 miles from north to south, many rivers empty into it with a large number of rivers also outflowing from it. Its exact depth is unknown, but it is generally accepted to be over a mile deep at its lowest point. There are reliable reports of cave systems honeycombing its entire length.

The Chalk Tablelands rise up from the western coast of the Keshin Sea. A true borderlands, with thin strips of civilisation surrounded by the omnipresent wilderness. The entire area sits atops the ruins of many former civilisations both human and other. The lure of hidden palaces and lost cities attracts many adventurers and fortune seekers, with many returning disappointed, beaten or not at all.
The Helegu Khaganate
Overview

A powerful confederation of nomadic tribes that were united under a great leader Khagan Temir 300 years ago. Over the next 200 years the Helegu consolidated a huge inland khaganate obliterating and subjugating many civilisations and tribes, both human and non-human. Tens of millions million were killed during these years.

The Khaganate stretched from the cold steppes in the north, then south across grasslands, plains, deserts to the tropical savanna. It is often referred to by the Helegu as the “Land under the Eternal Blue Sky”.

The Treonol Autocracy
Overview

The Treonol Autocracy is a client state of the Roaring Host (Tocave Khan).

The nation exists on a plateau with hills to the west and east, mountains to the south and the Brass Desert to the north. It is dry and hot in summer, cool and wet in the brief winter. Thousands of years ago it was incredibly wet and lush and still maintains some remnant forests and deep lakes which are seemingly bottomless.

The eastern part of Treonol is largely borderlands and wilderness with towns strung out along the old caravan routes, which are now being turned into the fortified roads. Before the Helegu invasions the east was more heavily populated and Treonol was in constant conflict with Jayak tribes.

Treonol is ruled by Autocrat Maro Kush Nefor. Vicious and cunning, the Autocrat expands his own wealth and power at the expense of his own people while playing a dangerous game to keep the Helegu from interfering too directly.

Telehetti and the Erensari
Overview

The Erensari is a vast plains and grassland stretching over more than a thousand miles. This grass sea is interspersed with woodlands, rolling hills, deep open pits and crisscrossed by more than a dozen navigable rivers.

In the very north is the Kingdom of Serakka, which is a former client state to the Helegu.

Telehetti are the dominant ethnic humans who dwell on rest the Erensari.

Janto Traders / Janto Sea People
Overview

Across the length of the eastern cost the Janto Traders travel in huge linked caravans exceeding 60ft in length pulled by massive paraceratherium. These large multi-generational Janto trader clans frequently join up with their fleets in secret ports and other bases which are hidden from outsiders.

The different trader clans compete with each other, internally the families vie for high status and engage in an endless cycle of politicking and power plays.

Title to trade and clan property resides with the headman, who holds it in the name of the community, although family proprietors enjoy the use of Clan goods as long as they actively support Clan activities

The headman of each clan is a boss.

Teyrin Elves
Overview

Covered in blue tattoos, the Teyrin are a wide ranging and hidden kingdom of elves that stretch across much of the Western Continent.

Secretive in the extreme, the Teyrin are wild elves who lead largely nomadic lives. Skin colour is pale and slightly luminescent when born before darkening into a deep ivory when mature.

They avoid contact with other races, only occasionally making an appearance in the wider world. Even other elves find them difficult to locate and interact with.

Radiant Coast
Overview

On the far north eastern coast of the western continent, the Radiant Coast and its attendant cities are a popular highway for traders and travellers from distant Faerun and from the south, west and north of the continent (e.g. Kingdom of Jorentes; the lands of the Helegu hosts; Untari, the Erg Interior; the Stonewall States; Erensari Grasslands; the Ubarg Goblin Kingdoms; the lands of the Guptarids and Peshpekar; Obinah, Solinor & Cenopset in the Brass Desert; Empire of Golden Akkad)

The city states of the Radiant Coast include Port of Seas, Gramidern, Wolf Reach, Ordim Fell, Bericor, Keren City, Gollan City, Blue Wall, Xander, and Dragon Watch.

Moranth
Overview

The Moranth are an Elder race of humans. They wore armour sutured to their skin.

Rarely encountered in the modern day

Ephereum
Overview

The Ephereum are a race of fey with nictating eyes and green luminescent skin containing algae beneath the surface. They travel on lean barges that traverse all waterways in the connected realms. They were formerly connected by tithe to the Abyssal Demon Lord Orcus.

The Ephereum fled their home Feywild as it fragmented and seperated from its home world before beginning its slow dissolve into the void. The Feywild they originated from was not the Feywild connected to Faerun, but one connected to another unknown world.

Semudan Empire
Overview

Known as the Ruby Empire of Redin Semudan. The Emperor Oghenkaro rules from Zanji. As of current day, the Empire is 10 years into a brutal civil war between Emperor Oghenkaro and his sister Empress Ememchiamo.

Emperor Oghenkaro was the younger child of the former Emperor and was crowned as imperial ruler upon death of his father. The elder ofthe two, Ememchiamo claimed she was made heir by her father and that Oghenkaro is an usurper. The ensuring civil war has split the Empire into many different factions, and there are currently 3 cities in open rebellion to any imperial claim - Adezine, Calakpene, Yolakoja.

During a meeting with Taleiriah, Ophion was told she was heading to the Duel Courts of Maleficence and Beneficence in Semudan. She was coy on which belonged to the Emperor, and which to the Empress.

Stone Giants
::Overview
During the time of Carkade the Stone Giants were compelled to leave their territory by entering into pact with Aves Reva. His return puts the Stone Giants at risk as he enslaved so many last time in the “dreaming”.

Stone Giants fear the enslavement of their people to whoever controls the various Covenant stones.

Stone Giants will not cross into the territory that was once consecrated, but is now deconsecrated as part of the Covenant of Confinement.

Orcs and Orc Hordes
::Overview
* Across the western continent Orc hordes arise rapidly under self proclaimed Orc Kings or Queens across the western continent
* Each hordes draw to them hundreds of smaller Orc tribes and number in excess 100,000 individuals
* Some Orc hordes arise, make war or achieve the purpose that brought them togetehr and evaporate rapidly back into smaller bands, while others have endured for centuries
* Currently the Orc tribes of the Yavimayan are at high risk of forming into a new Orc horde
* Ojasi are a powerful and feared Orc lead mercenary Orc group

Kingdom of Jorentes
::Overview
* At the eastern fringe of Helegu influence lay the Kingdom of Jorentes.
* Jorentes controls large parts of the Saturn Mountains and the vast fertile Jorentes plateau which is surrounded by the Saturn mountains. Jorentes in the past 50 years has moved into grasslands beyond the western foothills into the territory formerly occupied by a huge number of city-states and minor kingdoms prior to Helegu invasion 300 years ago.
* The largest and most impressive Jorentes cities are housed in the Saturn Mountains and other than the capital include Lunar Major, Saltus Major, Exculis Major, Crinis Major, Andromeda.
* Cities lost to the Helegu included Prius, Canus Stellae Major and Sacrem Tor.
* King Nemedden Moonrunner rules from the capital Solis Major, atop of which sits the huge fortification of Solis Minor. Solis Minor is the last major obstacle to an army invading from the west reaching the Jorentes plateau
* Jorentes population includes millions of refugees from the times of the Helegu expansion and large populations of demi-humans. The native Jorenteans are now a minority popoulation within their kingdom.
* Solis Major sits on a high plateau guarding the largest and most accessible pass through the mounatins.
* Jorentes control extends west into the plains of former territories destroyed by the Helegu and into lands where Helegu influence has declined with the fall of the Khaganate
* Jorentes main defensive fortifications start in the foothills of the Saturn Mountains and consist of hundreds of miles of defensive walls, heavily fortified citadels and and great castles defending passes into the mountains.
Dark Heart of the Night

Unique magic item

The Dark Heart of the Night was created from of one of Yurlunggur’s Avatars who is in a perpetual state of Torpor. Its ability to transcend planes and exist in multiple states at once allows the Wyrding and Feywild to be channelled through it to the mortal world.

The Dark Heart is over 100,000 years old and was created spontaneously when Wonambi descended upon the world and instigated a catastrophe which swept the western continent by triggering the failure of a series of ancient ice dams.
Latter-day gods can no longer enter the prime plane in any meaningful way. They can send avatars or directly communicate with their followers but even these methods make them extremely vulnerable to others.

The Latter-day gods are a million years product of regeneration, fusing, divine birth & rebirth and spontaneous creation. The bones of fallen latter-day gods litter the multiverse, slowing returning to the spaces, their divine spark absorbed by another god, held onto by powerful beings, set free to reform or regenerate as a new god.
For destroying the rebel general, his army and his followers Captain Bail Kenzee were allowed a share of the loot which included a +1 greataxe that was formerly in possession of the general’s Jinserric1 personal champion.

Khaine:

Ophion Siabhaal (see Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide p.119 for naming convention) was raised in a Bhaali cult in the Mulhorandi region, and was always told that the blood flowing through his veins came from the Lord of Murder himself.

The cult he was raised in moved in high society, taking great pleasure from murdering aristocracy and socialites in subtle, but horrifying fashion, and insinuating themselves into the recently vacated positions of power and prestige, a source of great humour for the cultists.
Ophion, along with his two sisters, Taleiriah (Tah-lay-re-ah) and Vularai (Voo-lah-righ) were taught from birth to hide in plain sight (at much as Tieflings can. More in a social sense), whilst behind closed doors, were instructed in the ways of murder, torture and ritual. All in the name of Bhaal. Among their tutors were a half-dozen other cultists living in a commune-esque arrangement. They were also ritually scarred and tattooed during each rite. To this day, Ophion is careful to hide the majority of his flesh from others.
While Taleiriah and Vularai took to the lessons of Bhaal with relish, Ophion came to grow tired of the constant bloodshed, backstabbing and indoctrination, finding some measure of solace in music. It calmed the rage in his soul, and provided some measure of escape from the evils surrounding him daily.

A favoured hobby of the cult was to kidnap children off the street, or if possible, directly from families who could never strike back against them, savouring the torment of the parents, generally before slaughtering them in an orgy of violence in front of their own children. The things the cult did to these children was unspeakable. Degradation, perversion and ultimately, a painful death drawn out over time.
It was one of these children who would shape the person Ophion would most like to be. Her name was Nulara, a Mulan girl. A girl possessed of a quiet dignity, even in the face of the cult, who shared Ophions’ love of music.
During her captivity, Ophion would sneak away to speak to her, and quietly play music with her. He with a Yarting he found, she with a small flute. It was through these secret meetings that Ophion discovered his natural affinity for magic merged perfectly with his love of music, allowing him to cast spells with greater ease if used in conjunction to his performing music. This affinity had to be hidden, naturally, from his family, and so he found his passion and intensity for it increasing. In those moments he was able to release all his emotion through the music, it produced a cacophonic, discordant, yet undeniably moving sound. He would scream, wail, roar and sing as he played, Nularas’ ability on the flute harmonising with the music.

On Ophions 12th birthday, his world ended. A grand affair was planned in the halls of the elite, an even more elaborate ‘party’ to occur afterward. A more intimate, family affair. At the height of the ceremony in of praise to Bhaal, blood flowing amongst the butchered corpses, Nulara was bought forward as one of the final sacrifices. Ophion desperately wanted to save her, but found his courage wanting. He wept as his mother severed Nularas digits and cauterised the wounds. The gathered disciples applauded as she carved the symbol of Bhaal into Nularas flesh, again and again and again. His struggles were interpreted as enthusiasm by the crowd, and they embraced him as he fought to stop his mother from slitting Nularas throat, before ramming the sacrificial blade through her own heart. His screams of anguish were drowned out by the crowd, but did not go unnoticed by Taleiriah.

Ophion bided his time over the next three years, channelling his guilt over failing Nulara into his music and magic, and finding a way to escape, and eventually destroy the cult. He learnt to play Nulara’s flute, and other instruments, but always favoured his battered Yarting.

The day of his 16th birthday, Ophion knew the time had come. At the culmination of his birthday rite, he unleashed his rage upon his family, burning the compound to the ground, and murdering most of the cultists. His sisters escaped his retribution, however. What’s worse, Taleiriah has Nulara’s flute, a constant source of pain to Ophion.
He now wanders the world, playing his unique style of music in taverns for cash, always keeping an ear out for word of Bhaali cultist activity, especially those of his sisters. This, however, is tempered by his need to keep a low profile, as he is aware that the cult is looking for him, and his death will be neither quick nor painless. He is always reluctant to discuss his past, given peoples natural suspicion of Tieflings, and the actions of the cult. Ophion will often give false names if he suspects anything untoward in those he is dealing with.

Ophion has a soft spot for the Mulan people, given his history with Nulara, hence his friendship with Ephut Ki.

Carkade

Peoples

During a meeting with Taleiria, Ophion was told she was heading to the Duel Courts of Maleficence and Beneficence in Semudan. She was coy on which belonged to the Emperor, and which to the Empress.

Stone Giants fear the enslavement of their people to whoever controls the various Covenant stones.

Stone Giants will not cross into the territory that was once consecrated, but is now deconsecrated as part of the Covenant of Confinement.

20 years ago one chapter was employed by the Roaring Host to destroy a rebellious general who had taken up refuge in an abandoned fortress at the fringes of the Brass Desert near the Paracer Ascension.

For destroying the rebel general, his army and his followers Captain Bail Kenzee were allowed a share of the loot which included a +1 greataxe that was formerly in possession of the general’s Jinserric1 personal champion.
They were heavily involved in massacre at Phobos2, the Gestahl bloodbath3 and Jeshi Widom4 execution.
The Rakis Rift on the western side of the Chalk Tablelands is a huge natural barrier hundreds of miles long, routinely 10 miles wide and many miles deep in places.

As soon as the sun touches the horizon, some of the party see the sigils. Entirely wall ripples. Names on walls. Rolls for names on walls.
* Enemies approach from the sides (Gnoll Flesh Gnawers), archers with wickdly barbed arrowheads

* Tough enemies: a Flind, some Fangs, and a "dog with a scorpion tail" (Shoosuva demon - personal pets of the Demon Lord Yeenoghu)

* Mayb and Ophion get knocked down, pulled to safety and stabilised

* Once the Flind, one the Fangs, and the dog (Shoosuva) are destroyed, an alp horn sounds, and the gnolls retreat, but only to the edge of the forest, lingering as if desperate to come back and finish us off; there is a static charge in the air as a storm pours down from the highlands

* With his hammer, Ephut Ki picks up the flail the Flind is no longer in need of, sensing the magic in it and knowing as a Cleric it would end badly for him if he were to touch it.

* We retreat to the other side of the bridge to the cliffs of white stone and investigate the area

* Found a polished stone embedded in the ground which said in Sylvan

Abandon all control you who enter
You are Skaedguard now
Bail is your One and Master

* This stone was also visible in the Feywild and indicates that the Skaedguard and Captain Bail have claimed the corresponding territory in the Feywild

* We put up a magic hut and rest

* In the night 20 horsemen on patrol bearing a 'viking' styled 'V' on their clothing were on patrol through the ruins of the town near the bridge - suspected of being part of the Skaedguard

* Heian senses where there are humanoids, recognising the clumps as settlements. We head for the largest. There is one area at the edge of his 5 mile range he can detect nothing

* Heian also detected 2 large gnoll warbands and a larger number of Orcs on the lowerside of the hills + 2 Brass Dragons on the uppermost side of the hill

* Approaching the main "town" you pass some humans and orcs who have been crucified on an X cross upside down

* Past the worked fields and into the the sprawling village , there's a ramshackle market, with lots of lovely food on offer. We notice a man sitting at one of the tables, he beckons us over, only Ruben goes to chat.

* He starts talking to Ruben in Dwarven, all friendly initially, but then turning hard, demanding to know who we are, and why we are here. Then he switches languages - besides Ruben, only Ophion recognises the language but unlike Ruben, he does not speak it or understand what is being said.

* Ephut Ki realises something's not right, and goes over to give Ruben back up. They discover this man is Eekeb Vandorack (the very man we have been on the hunt for). He insists on taking all of us to meet his Captain. It is clear it is not a choice. He asks us our names - Ophion provides a false name clearly not trusting the man with that knowledge. Eekeb is enamoured with Maybellina and Ophion both. He starts flirting with Maybellina, securing her position as next to him for the ride to the Captain, and then when meeting Ophion, proclaiming how he thinks teiflings should be worshiped and praised for they are the bridge between demons and humans.

* On horseback, we head off to meet the Captain.

* Travel further under heavy clouds and mountain mist, not so many trees but lush clumps of grass and ground cover on rocky soil - we pass many small temporary settlements and fields

* During the ride, Heian, Maybellina and Ephut Ki noticed a rift into the Feywild.

* The ridges and linked high fields give way to open tablelands where we see a large fortified manor, outbuildings and people working

* An alarm rings out from out the open stone mouths of a 3 headed Mahakala statue and a streak of pure black appears in the sky
